The Environment

We work to reduce our impacts on the environmental we all share by minimising the use of natural resources, reducing or preventing pollution, managing waste effectively and integrating environmental considerations into our decisions.

Environmental responsibility is a key element of our commitment to sustainable development. Our approach is guided by the Swire Pacific Sustainable Development Policy and key environmental principles that ensure environmental considerations are an integral part of our decision-making, management and culture.

Responsible environmental management is fundamental to our business. We aim to comply with all environmental regulations and requirements related to our operations and development activities. We assess the environmental impact of our activities and seek to integrate environmental considerations into the planning, design, construction, operation, maintenance and demolition of all our facilities and services.

We support building rating schemes that measure these impacts as they provide a mark of quality that commercial tenants, buyers, investors and employees recognise and value. In Hong Kong, 14 of our properties are rated ‘Excellent’ or ‘Platinum’, the highest ratings under the independent Building Environmental Assessment Method (BEAM). We aim to achieve BEAM Platinum for our new projects in Hong Kong, and the US Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold standard for selected parts of our new developments in Mainland China.

Impacts

In order to keep track of our environmental impacts, we monitor our environmental impacts through our Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) database and our senior management are regularly updated on incidents and progress through our Sustainable Development Steering Committee and the Swire Group Sustainability Committee. The ways in which our property development and management activities may impact the environment include greenhouse gas emissions from electricity used in our buildings, waste generated in the operation, construction and demolition of buildings, water used in building operations, noise pollution and impacts to air quality.
