Quarry Bay : Gateway to Island East

At 9.79 hectares, Quarry Bay Park is the second largest park on Hong Kong Island. Yet it is not only difficult to access from a number of places, but also suffers from:

compromised access due to the location of the roadway

limited open space

inadequate amenities for families and children

disproportional large areas covered by sports facilities and paved areas

unsympathetic landscaping

for a park of this size, very little actual ‘park’ space for enjoyment

This proposal suggests that the Quarry Bay and Taikoo Shing and neighbouring areas can be better integrated to form one large Island East Park, and thus form the main entranceway and lawn for the whole of Island East.

Improvements to help achieve this could include:

1. Contiguous Waterfront Promenade with dining and pedestrian amenity kiosks;

2. Integrated green ‘sky bridges’ linking together various disparate spaces;

3. Ground level, tree-lined walk leading from Quarry Bay office cluster and parking;

4. Two-storey seafront restaurants and new floating ferry pier linking to Kai Tak, Lei Yue Mun, Central Harbour and Shau Kei Wan Fisherman’s Wharf;

5. New entry off-ramp to access Island East from the waterfront;

6. A multi-use ecology themed destination overlooking educational habitats with exhibition and event spaces;

7. Waterfront beacon masts to mark points of access to and along the harbourfront.

The aforementioned improvements would almost double the size of the existing waterfront park area for the neighbourhood, along with the creation of new activity and event space for public activities in an innovative Eco-themed park destination.
