Swire first started developing
the eastern part of Hong Kong Island at the end of the
19th century, building the Taikoo dockyard and a sugar
refinery located at what is today known as TaiKoo Place.
In the late 1970s, following the relocation of the sugar
refinery, Swire started to develop Island East into a
distinctive commercial hub. Later, in 1990, the Hong Kong
Government's Metroplan strategy* envisioned a network
of decentralised A-Grade business nodes, including Quarry
Bay, and Swire played an extensive role in the implementation
of this strategy with the gradual development of prime
office buildings supported by commercial and social amenities.
TaiKoo Place, now the preferred home of some 300 multinational
organisations and some 30,000 workers, is already a vibrant
commercial hub set amid well designed landscaped areas
housing a variety of shops, restaurants and facilities
for year-round cultural and arts performances.
