Charlotte Ng joined Swire Properties as a trainee directly out of university. Since then, she has assumed a variety of different building engineering roles throughout the Company. Charlotte is a good example of a Swire Properties employee who has had the opportunity to develop her on-the-job and managerial skills as her career has blossomed and as she has taken on more responsibility.


What do you do at Swire Properties? How long have you been with the Company?

I joined the Company as a trainee after graduating from university. My first assignment was with the Taikoo Place Management Office, followed by a stint with the Cityplaza Management Office, where I was in charge of operation and maintenance of the office portfolio. I then spent six months in Miami, Florida working on the construction of our condominium towers in Brickell City CentreI was transferred to EAST, Hong Kong during its preopening period, where I was responsible for conducting system testing and setting up a new technical team for the hotel. I then returned to working on the office and neighbourhood shops portfolio at Cityplaza, where I handled general operation and maintenance and took part in various improvement works and energy saving projects. Most recently, I have taken up a new role at Citygate as part of a team that is preparing the Company’s new retail development in Tung Chung.

Tell us something more about yourself.

I was raised in Quarry Bay near where Swire’s old Coca-Cola bottling plant was located. When I was small, I did a lot of weekend hiking with my family around Mount Parker. Our destination was usually the Woodside House, a red brick house on Mount Parker Road, which I later discovered had been Swire staff quarters a long time ago. As I grew up, I spent considerable time at the Cityplaza mall, which formed an important element of my childhood neighbourhood. So, interestingly, I grew up surrounded by elements of Swire’s story – past and present – long before I started my career here.

What’s a typical workday like for you?

My workdays are never typical! On any given day, I’m tasked with everything from reviewing new designs and managing operations to controlling budget execution. The common element to all my workdays is that I work together with my colleagues as a team to handle these challenges.

What has been your most memorable experience so far at Swire Properties?

My most memorable experience was during my time as part of the EAST, Hong Kong team, when I reported on all technical matters directly to the hotel’s general manager. In addition to handling the handover of the hotel’s technical systems, I helped put a new technical team in place for the hotel, which included recruitment, staff training and setting up of policy and procedures. I did a little bit of everything at EAST, Hong Kong; my time there even included trying out each guest room over a two-month period before the hotel’s soft opening! While my assignment there was challenging, I had the full support of my team, and together we managed to adequately prepare the hotel’s technical team from preopening to full operation.

What have been your most memorable non-work-related experiences at the Company so far?

Working at Swire Properties has given me a wealth of opportunities – I’ve lived in Hong Kong and several cities in Mainland China, and I’ve had first-hand involvement in a host of residential, commercial and hotel projects. But I especially value the lasting friendships I’ve made in all the places I have lived. On top of that, I’ve had the opportunity to travel extensively throughout Mainland China – a fascinating and exciting place which is always changing.
