Bringing People to the Harbourfront

Although stretching across more than 200 hectares of Hong Kong Harbour, at present there is no continuously accessible waterfront between North Point and Chai Wan. At the same time, there is a serious lack of quality green spaces for visitors, residents and local workers. In fact, much of this stretch of the harbour is dominated by major roadways and unattractive structures, with little or no convenient pedestrian access to the waterfront from nearby inland areas.
With this in mind, this proposal attempts to identify some of the key issues that exist along the waterfront in Island East, and offers remedial steps that could be taken to create a beneficial environment.
The proposal envisages the following:
Doubling the accessible harbour frontage by creating a series of pedestrian boardwalks and providing a continuous link of 10 km between North Point and Chai Wan.
Better utilising existing piers and incorporating local heritage to create vibrant destination nodes along the harbourfront.
Enhancing the existing 9.7 ha Quarry Bay Park into an 18 ha Island East Park with improved visual and physical connections to the waterfront and a series of inspiring green bridges.
Building an innovative, multi-use Eco-themed destination in an expanded Island East Park to accommodate activities and event spaces promoting sustainability.
Refurbishing the existing Fish Market at Shau Kei Wan into an attractive Fisherman’s Wharf destination with dining opportunities.
Creating a water sports centre at Chai Wan as a gateway to the natural marine habitats of Hong Kong waters.
It is proposed that these improvements will not only enhance several local areas but also contribute to the broader vision of Hong Kong Harbour in a manner that celebrates sustainability, heritage and the quality of life.
