Over 50,000 Books Find a Second Home at Swire Properties’ Charity Book Sale

More than HK$465,000 was raised in a charity book sale organised by Swire Properties from 23 to 26 April at ArtisTree in TaiKoo Place. Titled “Books for Love @ $10”, the event was attended by almost 15,000 participants and sold more than 50,000 books, the majority of which were donated by the public at the beginning of this year.

More than 500 Swire Properties’ Community Ambassadors and volunteers from The Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs Association of Hong Kong (BGCA) participated in the charity campaign, including a group of elderly former Taikoo Dockyard and Taikoo Sugar staff members who worked for Swire more than 20 to 30 years ago, and live in the Island East neighbourhood.

To promote literacy and foster a love for reading in children, a series of interactive workshops, including storytelling and creative handicraft making, were conducted by BGCA’s senior social workers on the last day, attracting more than 500 children and parents.

The four-day book sale was the culmination of the “Books for Love” campaign, which began with a two-month charity book drive that lasted from February to April 2014. The charity campaign has, since it was first held in 2009, received an overwhelming response from Swire Properties’ clients, tenants and the general public.

All proceeds were donated to BGCA to support its “Treasure Trove” project. Swire Properties also sponsored a group of children from BGCA to purchase books during the book sale to encourage literacy and boost the children’s passion for reading.
