Swire Properties breaks donation record in charity book sale

More than HK$510,000 was raised in a charity book sale organised by Swire Properties from 23 to 26 April at ArtisTree in Taikoo Place. Titled “Books for Love @ $10”, the event attracted over 15,000 visitors and sold 60,000 books, the majority of which were donated by the public in a book drive at the beginning of this year. All proceeds from the event will go to The Boys’ & Girls’ Clubs Association of Hong Kong (BGCA).

More than 300 of Swire Properties’ Community Ambassadors and volunteers from BGCA participated in the operation of the charity sale, including a group of former Taikoo Dockyard and Taikoo Sugar staff members who worked for the Swire group more than 20 to 30 years ago.

A series of free-of-charge interactive storytelling and creative workshops were conducted by non-profit organisations Shakespeare4All Hong Kong and BGCA senior social workers. In addition, the semi-final competition of the “Children Storytelling Competition 2015” co-organised by BGCA and Radio Television Hong Kong was hosted at ArtisTree on 26 April.

All proceeds from the book sale were donated to BGCA to support its “Growing Partner2 – Child Development Fund”, which helps children from low-income families learn to overcome adversity and build self-confidence. Swire Properties also sponsored 163 families from BGCA to purchase books during the book sale to encourage an early love for reading in children.

The four-day book sale was the culmination of the “Books for Love” campaign, which began with a two-month charity book drive that lasted from February to March 2015. The charity campaign has, since it was first held in 2009, received an overwhelming response from Swire Properties’ clients, tenants and the general public.
