Swire Properties Presents “Urban Series” Concert at Taikoo Li Sanlitun

“Wu Man and Her Friends” fuse pipa with contemporary Western music

Swire Properties was proud to present “Wu Man and Friends”, the opening concert of the Urban Series for the 19th Beijing Music Festival (BMF) at The Orange in Taikoo Li Sanlitun on 18 October. Grammy Award Winner and the world’s premier pipa virtuoso, Ms Wu Man, together with her friends, opened the Urban Series with the Asian premiere of several of her works, treating the audience to a unique musical fusion of traditional pipa with contemporary Western sound.

This year, a record 16 performances are staged at Taikoo Li Sanlitun. In addition to The Orange, another multipurpose space, The Red, also hosts cutting-edge performances, including the interactive opera Giovanni, and a multimedia chamber opera named Blank Out which incorporates interactive 3D film and live electronic music. As part of this year’s broad arts and musical experience, this Saturday’s Swire Night concert will feature teenage musicians from Guangzhou, who will perform a symphony to commemorate the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s death.

“We are proud to present an outstanding lineup at Taikoo Li Sanlitun for this year’s Beijing Music Festival,” said Guy Bradley, Chief Executive of Swire Properties. “2016 marks our seventh year of partnering with BMF to bring world-class music to audiences in Beijing.  In addition, 2016 also holds special meaning for the Swire group, since it marks the 150th anniversary of the group’s establishment in Mainland China, as well as the 200th anniversary of its establishment in the UK. This year’s BMF is a wonderful extension of our celebrations, and as always, we are delighted to bring a memorable arts experience to our local neighbourhood and to music lovers in the city.”

"Next year will mark the 20th anniversary of BMF,” said Yu Long, Artistic Director of Beijing Music Festival. “We are very pleased to have joined hands with Swire Properties for seven consecutive years in bringing many incredible experiences and surprises to music lovers in Beijing and the Sanlitun community. With joint effort from both organisations, we successfully combined classical music with modern way of life at Taikoo Li Sanlitun in a very inspiring way, and at the same time reflected the diversity and cross-boundary qualities of BMF. We hope to take our future collaborations even further as a bridge to connect art and people’s lives.”
