CASE STUDY: Green Roof at Festival Walk

The green roof at Festival Walk (with an area of 2,800 sq ft or 260 sq m) could achieve an energy saving potential of about 60 kWh/sq m per year, a reduction in CO2e emission of about 9,000 kg per year.

In June 2007, we started a Green Roof Project at the level 3 roof of Festival Walk with the aim of identifying energy saving benefits and providing aesthetic benefits to our tenants and the public. The design and technical criteria of the green roof included considerations of the existing roof condition, structural loading capacity, building services provision and access for maintenance.

The benefits of green roofs include aesthetic, environmental and economic:

  • Increase building insulation and energy efficiency
  • Reduce the Urban Heat Island Effect (UHIE)*
* The UHIE refers to temperatures in city areas running higher than those in suburban and rural areas, mainly due to increasingly built up areas which jeopardise airflow and also human activities which generate heat becoming more concentrated. The main impacts are on air quality and energy use (e.g. greater use of air conditioning in buildings).

Currently, both the Government and private sector are actively promoting and implementing greening initiatives to improve the living environment in Hong Kong. We will share our experience with the public and explore further opportunities within our property developments and surroundings.

From our stakeholder
Media: Swire Properties has a reputation of dealing with EHS issues positively. It would be interesting to read more about issues with social effect, case studies supported by statistics, and the Company's efforts in tackling global issues such as climate change.
