Pritzker Prize-Winning Architect Frank Gehry’s First Exhibition in Greater China

A unique exhibition of works by the acclaimed architect Frank Gehry forms the centerpiece of this year’s autumn calendar at Sanlitun Village North, Beijing. The exhibition, entitled Frank Gehry. Architect, is the first to be held in Greater China by the Pritzker Prize-winning architect, and will be open to the public from 18 October.

Frank Gehry has become renowned for his extraordinary contributions to the field of architecture and design, for which he has received several of the most significant awards in architecture. The Sanlitun Village North exhibition presents a selection of projects spanning the architect’s career, including his most celebrated buildings, the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain and the Walt Disney Concert Hall in downtown LA, United States. It also unveils the creative process behind Gehry’s first residential development in Asia, Swire Properties’ 53 Stubbs Road in Hong Kong. Through drawings, models, photographs and video footage, visitors have an opportunity to follow the unique creative journey of this exceptional architect.

The exhibition is organised by Swire Properties Limited, a leading developer of upscale commercial and residential properties in Hong Kong and Mainland China, which has major mixed-use projects currently under development in Beijing, Guangzhou and Shanghai. Swire Properties’ existing China developments, The Opposite House hotel and Sanlitun Village, have become new landmarks in Beijing.

The exhibition marks the first opportunity for audiences in China to explore Gehry’s design, and the acclaimed architect expressed his pleasure that the exhibition has opened in Beijing. “Our first building in China will be completed in 2012 in Hong Kong, and I am very excited at the prospect of sharing the evolution of this special development with the people of Beijing. I hope the exhibition will inspire visitors as well as offer them a greater insight into how we work,” said Gehry, who is the Design Architect for Swire Properties’ 53 Stubbs Road project in Hong Kong.

The sentiment is shared by Martin Cubbon, Chief Executive of Swire Properties. “We are delighted to be the first to bring the work of this celebrated architect to China,’ said Cubbon. “Frank Gehry is one of the most important and visionary architects of modern times and we are privileged to be able to collaborate with such a distinguished talent. Swire Properties is particularly pleased to be able to share our passion for inspirational design with the Beijing public through this exhibition, which demonstrates our commitment to bringing exciting and enriching events to Sanlitun Village.” Cubbon added.
