Elsa Man joined Swire Properties as a surveyor trainee in 1991 immediately after graduating from university. Over the course of her career at Swire Properties, Elsa has worked in a number of different roles, mostly in Hong Kong, but also including a short stint in Miami, Florida. Elsa is an example of a long-time Swire Properties employee who has grown and developed alongside the Company.

What do you do at Swire Properties?

I’m the Senior Development Manager in the Development and Valuations Department (D&V), which is responsible for identifying development opportunities, preparing feasibility studies, proposing business cases, making valuations, and acquiring and developing new projects for investment and trading in Hong Kong. We are also responsible for advising the Company on general town planning and land administration matters. My current duties include working on our ALASSIO residential development in Mid-Levels West and the Taikoo Place redevelopment project.

Tell us something more about yourself.

I was raised in a small village near Tai Po and I joined Swire Properties as a surveyor trainee immediately after graduating from the University of Hong Kong in 1991. During and following my initial two-year training period, I was assigned to different departments, including D&V, and I also spent six months in Miami, Florida and two years in the Sales Department. I have two young children at home, and they keep me very busy outside of work!

What’s a typical workday like for you?

I normally start the day by reading newspapers – a set at home and a set at work – in order to stay up to date on market news. Other than that, my workdays are never typical – at D&V, every day poses different challenges!

What do you enjoy best about your job? And what has made you stay at Swire Properties for so many years?

I actually enjoy the research and analytical part of the job most. It is interesting and empowering to understand the stories and problems behind the data and then propose appropriate business cases or improvements. I’ve stayed at the Company for so many years because I feel that Swire Properties values its employees, especially by promoting a healthy work–life balance, which is particularly important to a working mom like me.

What are your proudest achievements at the Company?

My proudest achievements have all involved the entire team, including selling the 1,200 remaining residential units at Ocean Shores at the bottom of the market in 2003 and helping solidify Taikoo Place’s role as a preeminent business hub through additions like EAST, Hong Kong and Taikoo Place Apartments, and through the visionary Taikoo Place redevelopment project. At Swire Properties, the talent and performance of each employee is recognised, but it is when these are turned into a team effort that everyone really succeeds.
