Swire Properties Launches New Sustainability Initiative, Plant, During Earth Month

Community invited to participate in interactive and educational experiences that inspire a more sustainable lifestyle

This Earth Month, Swire Properties Inc., one of South Florida’s leading international developers of urban real estate, will continue its long-standing commitment to sustainable development and living with the launch of PLANT (People, Lifestyle and Nature Together), a series of ongoing educational and interactive activations both virtually and at Brickell City Centre, that inspire environmental action and a more sustainable lifestyle.

PLANT is Swire USA’s most recent effort to support the company’s ambitious Sustainable Development 2030 (SD2030) commitment to be a leader in sustainable development and living by 2030. The initiative includes a series of educational and engaging experiences both online and in person, including:

  • Educational Campaign: Swire USA is leading the conversation on sustainability on social media and in person at Brickell City Centre. Swire’s social campaign on Instagram (@SwirePropertiesUSA) is creating awareness on the status of global warming, highlighting Miami’s waste and recycling impact, and providing simple actions to live more sustainably. Beginning on Earth Day April 22-24, SWIRE’s family friendly community platform, Gather, will also be hosting child-friendly activities at Brickell City Centre in partnership with Planet Patrol. The event, ARTivism Studio, will welcome families of children ages four and up for an afternoon of community advocacy and education on climate change through art and creativity. The interactive art studio will allow 10 persons at a time to ensure social distancing. For more details on ARTivisim, visit BrickellCityCentre.com/EarthMonth.
  • Clothing Donation Drive will be activated throughout the month where neighbors and community members are invited to spring clean their closets and donate pieces, which will be given to organizations such as Dress for Success, Suits for Success, and American Textile Recycling Service. The location of the clothing drive is Brickell City Centre, B Block L2 (253 B; next to Zara) from Wednesday to Sunday, 2:00 – 8:00 p.m.
  • The Pop-Ins: Throughout April, from Wednesday to Sunday 2:00 – 8:00 p.m., a selection of ethically sourced brands and products will be featured at two Pop-Ins locations at BCC (B Block, L1 and B Block L2 - Garden Deck) including Normou, Fachie Market, Thrifts + Threads, Miami Beach Bum, Apartment No.3, Mita Eyewear, Pitusa, Half Asleep, The Native Guy, Link’d, and Nayla. Swire will donate 100% of the fees collected to One Tree Planted, a non-profit organization focused on global reforestation. With $1.00 per tree, a total of 10,500 trees will be planted because of this initiative.
  • Back to Basics: Staying true to Swire Properties’ commitment to sustainability through PLANT, all activities will celebrate nature as will focus on gratitude towards Mother Earth. Find Your Centre programming such as HIIT with Tony Thomas, Earth Day Yoga & Meditation with Alec Spivack, Full Body workout with Paula Villarraga and more will take place at BCC during this month. “Since its inception, Swire has been an advocate for sustainable living and our intention with PLANT is to inspire and educate the local community through these different activities,” said Christa Dabkowski, VP Marketing of Swire Properties Inc, the developer behind Brickell City Centre. “The only way we will be successful in achieving a prosperous future through sustainable living is to work together as a community, and Swire is proud to bring this idea to the forefront in multiple ways,” he added.

Following Earth Month, Swire USA will continue the PLANT initiative by partnering with sustainability-focused organizations that will have the opportunity to propose initiatives that bring further awareness and educational tools to the local community. After evaluating and selecting the proposals, Swire USA will partner with these organizations, lending thought leadership, industry expertise, executive sponsorship as well as pre-determined financial subsidies to bring these impactful projects and co-sponsored programs to life.

Underlining the company’s commitment to sustainable development, SD2030 identifies opportunities for the company to decrease current and future energy consumption in its developments through long-term, community-focused projects, as well as implementing design and architecture features that reduce energy use, and more. As  part of the PLANT initiative, Swire USA’s latest partnerships include The Building Efficiency 305 program, or the #BE305 Challenge, which aims to improve water and energy efficiency in Miami Dade County. Moreover, the company recently renewed their partnership with Underline to promote sustainable urban development.

In recognition of Swire Properties Inc.’s sustainable development work, in 2017 it was included in the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index. Brickell City Centre was awarded LEED Gold for Neighborhood Development, the highest honor of LEED certification for its sustainable features like the Climate Ribbon elevated trellis to maneuver airflow, regulate temperature, maximize natural light and collect rainwater for reuse.
